Sun-browned, hollow-eyed figures drift through the dusty streets, weighed down by hardship.
Among them, one soul seems more adrift than the rest. Lost, and now the center of unwanted attention.
"You ought to keep that filthy mouth shut! How many times have we told you? You went too far last time! Are the rats no longer enough for you?"
Hero that you are, you cannot stand idly by. Not now.
You step in. Swift and decisive. Before the nearest assailant can bring his hammer down upon the defenseless outcast, he is already disarmed. A flash of energy - a lightning hook - lashes out, pinning him hard to the ground. His jaw cracks with a sickening sound. The others freeze. They know who you are. They know better than to challenge you. One by one, they flee, melting into the alleys and shadows.
You turn your attention to the old man. He is bleeding from the mouth, his legs scraped and raw.
"Thank you, stranger," he rasps. "These fools fear the truth more than death. They cling to their ignorance like babies to the breast. Tell me, wanderer, what life is worth more? One spent in repression and fear, or one lived in service to truth, no matter the cost?"
"They pour their anger onto me for this unspeakable evil that has gripped the land. But I'm not the one who made dozens vanish. No, no, it was green mingling with grey, twisting into something monstrous. I'm just a poor old fellow."
He pauses, lost in thought, his fingers absently stroking the bony ridges of his shins.
"Stranger, I swear it, if even a flicker more strength stirred in these legs, in this worn shell of a body, I would rise again. I never was the strongest, but I have never lacked courage. But you… you have both. Strength and spirit. I know who you are. Your name reaches even the forgotten places. And I suspect you are not here by chance."
Something stirs in you. Your eyes narrow, catch the light.
The old man sees it and smiles faintly. He knows.
He is right. Your instincts brought you here. And once again, they did not fail you. You have found him.
You are on the scent of flesh, even if it lingers with the stench of death.
Relentless as a hound, you pursue them. Those who hide in shadow, who feast and corrupt. You will not rest until you have unearthed their nest. Until the line between order and chaos blurs, until life and death are nothing but fading echoes.
You are the harbinger of truth.
The beggar stares into your eyes, and something within him recoils.He turns his face away, shaken.
He now knows that you are aware of his secret. You know the blood on his lips is not his own...
"You leave no survivors," he whispers, barely audible and foreseeing that he is doomed.
With a casual flick of your wrist, you lift him to his feet.Your voice is calm but firm. "Show me the way."
